When Letterpress Printing is the best choice

Letterpress has been labeled an antique technique of printing. It has been around for a couple of centuries and has seen its brink to extinction from the renaissance around the late 19th century until today. Though digital printing has overtaken letterpress printing for quite some time as the leading printing technique, the end of letterpress printing is yet to be seen. The advantages of letterpress printing which other printing methods have trouble to replicate make letterpress printing survive during these modern times.

Letterpress printing can provide an elegant finish with crisp and sharp letters and images is a valuable result for some organisations and industries. Its simplistic process which can be done by anyone even at home it has opened many opportunities as a hobby and business endeavor. Its authentic feel is something official documents and letters require making it possible to survive among several printing techniques available today. However, it is impractical to use letterpress printing all the time. There are scenarios which other printing techniques such as digital printing are more appropriate.

Here are several situations when letterpress printing is the best choice:

1. Limited edition books – Limited edition books only reaches a couple hundred of copies maximum. To counter this limited production, limited edition books are far expensive than regular books. Cheaply printed books will not worth much and won’t sell much if released. Letterpress printing complement the limited edition books perfectly by giving them a rare and authentic feeling which only a handful of people can purchase and own.

2. Artist’s Books – Artist’s books such as recipe books are not limited edition however, their content is far valuable than other books. These contents are the compilation of a lifetime career of the author and are expensive by their nature. Letterpress printing allows artist’s books to fetch for a higher price worthy of the book.

3. Greeting Cards – Greeting cards contain only few words or thoughts. With the receiver focused on the greeting message, the letterpress printing adds an artistic touch to the card increasing the sincerity and depth of the message in the card.

4. Broadsides – Broadsides are rarely seen today. It is the old version of newspapers which only has 1 page and the page is stick into the wall all over the streets. Most broadsides today are only produced for education purposes mainly for literature and history.

5. Invitations – Invitations are the representatives of the celebration or event. Using letterpress printing in the invitation suggests that the event or celebration is grand and important. Letterpress printed invitations are common on corporate events and parties hosted by wealthy individuals.

6. Official Documents – Official documents also use letterpress printing most of the time. Official documents or letters from the government or royalties use letterpress technique to put their official seal in the document.

The history of Beer Bottle Packaging

Beer is a popular alcoholic beverage throughout the world. You can find beer at almost all occasions and gatherings. The reason for its popularity is its availability and affordability. Compared to wine, beer can be purchased almost anywhere with much cheaper prices. However, beer distribution wasn’t always a worldwide. Beers were packaged in jars and kegs before beer bottle packaging was invented.

Beer bottle packaging was first used in the beer industry somewhere around 1700s. The first bottles were similar in design with the wine bottles. And just like wine bottles, earlier beer bottles used corks instead of cap crowns or twist-off covers.

It was not until the late 1700s that beer bottle packaging started to part from the wine bottle designs. The bottlenecks became shorter. The bottle was often called a porter. More than 50 years after porter beer bottle packaging was introduced, lager a new style of beer was released in the American market. The early bottle designs were similar to the bottle designs for mineral water. However, the porter design became the beer bottle packaging for lager somewhere in the 1850s. Even with the porter bottle being used in the market, another design that is now the foundation of current wine bottles was introduced in the market by the 1870s. The champagne beer bottle packaging has a narrow body and is widely used for beer, champagne and other kinds of beer such as root beer and small beer.

While the champagne beer bottle packaging was released, Weiss beer bottle was also introduced at the same time. The Weiss beer bottle has three variants which were traditional. These 3 bottle packaging were used for German brew or Weiss beer. When beer gained popularity somewhere around 1900s, it became an exported good. The earlier export beer bottle packaging has a wide body and a long neck. This allowed greater capacity than the local counterparts. However, some beer companies have adopted this design for local beer distribution. These are the different beer bottle packaging designs before the current beer bottles.

The beer packaging industry has evolved and is now not limited to bottles alone. There are kegs, which have been used ever since beer was commercialized, and cans which are now gaining the same popularity as beer bottles. With such a great history not only on the types of beers but also the different beer bottle packaging, you can always think back and imaging the different beer bottles that have been developed before the one in your hands next time you have a bottle of beer to enjoy.

My Shepherds Bush market rebrand

A lover of markets I recently popped down to Shepherds Bush Market whilst in London for the weekend.

I love London, as a designer London always inspires me in my work; the market is going through some major changes, one of them being their branding.

Giving my industry a brand change is always something that catches my eye. Changing branding is always a risky movement; get it wrong and it can literally close your business down.

Although the Shepherds Bush Market rebrand made sense considering the major work that’s happening in the area, a rebrand brings a fresh approach to the market as it shifts into a more modern outlook.

The market caters for a variety of people, as a designer you can find some really unique items, some of my best work has been inspired from places such as this.

Controversial, but it works and I bet it converted well!
